Getting absorbed by an alien blog is a really scary thing.
Seriously, consider this: You're minding your own business, walking along with your hands in your pockets. All of a sudden, a giant green blob (not a katamari) rolls right over you, absorbs you, and continues on its way.
You're now trapped inside. There's no air. In cartoons they always show the person talking from the inside. That's not real! That's a cartoon. What really happens? You drown slowly as your lungs fill with green blob… You're dead! When someone else gets absorbed, they experience the horror, before suffocating, of bumping into your dead lifeless body!
Luckily, Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack is a cartoon, so we don't have to worry about that.
If you've got any knowledge of About a Blob, the downloadable PS3 title from the same developers, you'll know where this is going. You control a blob with the ability to roll around, jump, and absorb stuff. While the previous title allows you to shoot things you absorbed, Mutant Blobs Attack does a great deal to streamline things for the Vita and its new interface.
Across twenty-four levels, you're tasked with helping this malicious, destructive blob survive until it devours entire skyscrapers. This will take you through the college world through to the city, each level more challenging than the last.
The Blob also gains a few powers along the way. The first is the power of magnetism. Using the L and R buttons, you can become positively or negatively attracted to glowing purple objects. Drinkbox Studios has devilishly concocted a handful of really difficult platforming scenes around this mechanic.
Eventually, you'll master the ability and float merrily past the hazards that litter each section. That's when you'll start playing around with rocket mode. With rocket mode you steer with the analog stick and accelerate with the 'X' button. Holding a finger on the rear touch panel or holding down a shoulder button will turn your rocket-boost into warp-speed. These sections are generally played in zero-gravity environments, but the floaty controls are just challenging enough to make levels interesting, without the frustration you'd feel from… generally floaty controls.
Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack will be available next week for new PlayStation Vita owners. Priced at only $7.99, MBA is looking like a great title to mix in with the retail Vita games you'll be buying alongside your shiny new handheld.
