tell gr weirdest game

Tell GR | What’s the weirdest game you’ve ever played?

We’ve all played a video game that has made us put down the controller and question what we’ve just witnessed. But while plenty of games feature odd moments, few manage to retain that level of weirdness throughout.

The GameRevolution editorial team discussed the weirdest games we’ve ever played below, though we want to hear your thoughts — what’s the strangest game you’ve ever experienced? As always, leave your responses in the comments section below, and we’ll feature our favorite response in tomorrow’s Tell GR.

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “Though more terrible than weird, playing the Net Yaroze game The Incredible Coneman back in the ’90s was incredibly confusing at the time. For those not in the know, Net Yaroze games were built using a special PlayStation that could be used to create homebrew games. These games were included in the UK’s Official PlayStation Magazine demo disks, allowing everyone to experience these little oddities. However, as I had no clue what Net Yaroze was back in the day, I’d load up these demos thinking they were snippets of full-price retail releases. Imagine having this mindset while playing The Incredible Coneman, a pitiful 3D Pac-Man clone created by the appropriately named Lars Barstad, that maddeningly repeats the same 5-second bassline for its entire duration. I didn’t understand what was going on with this game when I was a kid, and I barely understand what’s going on with it now.”

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “The weirdest game I’ve ever played is LSD: Dream Emulator. It’s probably the first game that could fall under the “walking simulator” category, and has no clear objective other than experiencing a huge variety of increasingly surreal dreamlike experiences. It’s incredibly unnerving and bizarre and I absolutely love it.”

Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “I think Hatoful Boyfriend is the weirdest game that I’ve ever played. I went in with an open mind, but I was also completely ignorant of what the game was about. I know the game has a huge fanbase, but a bunch of pigeons blasting me with thousands and thousands of lines of dialog just wasn’t entertaining to me. I know it’s a visual novel, but it was still bloody weird!”

Michael Leri, features editor: “I’m not usually one of those people who plays a weird toilet fire just to laugh at the fact that they just played a weird toilet fire but I did that with Deadly Premonition. It’s so unabashedly bizarre and I could never tell how much it knew that. Either way, I embraced it and love thinking about that game and the references it spawned. So says Mr. Leri.”

Question: What video game do you play with your significant other?

Bufford: “I rebuilt my old NES for my wife. We also play my old SNES. She doesn’t like “3D” games lol. When we do play together, it’s oldies like Mario 1-3, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, and Mario Cart.”
