Rumor: Xbox One Patch Will Pull Kinect GPU Power to Improve In-Game Performance

It appears Microsoft may be looking into narrowing the gap in graphical performance between Xbox One and PS4 by releasing a patch that will reallocate GPU power currently reserved for Kinect.

According to a report from Hot Hardware, video game insider Pete Doss (who is apparently in the know) has revealed that Microsoft is easing up on Kinect's GPU requirements, freeing some of that power up for the rest of the system. Currently, 10 percent of Xbox One's GPU is dedicated to Kinect, but a new patch will allegedly pull the 8 percent that is reserved for video processing to make games perform better.

There have been noticeable performance differences in recently released games that are available on both Sony and Microsoft's latest gaming platforms, with PlayStation 4 edging out Xbox One in virtually every instance. The latest release to draw attention is Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, which runs at a higher frame-rate on PS4.

According to the report, this won't put Xbox One on the same performance grounds as PlayStation 4, but it will at least narrow that graphical gap, allowing for smoother frame-rates. Of course, Microsoft has yet to say anything about a forthcoming patch like this, so treat this as rumor for the time being.
