A new “narrative campaign set in the Battlefield universe” is being developed by Ridgeline Games, a new studio established by EA. The developer, led by the Halo series’ co-creator and former Bungie Creative Director Marcus Lehto, will seemingly be unrelated to Battlefield 2042 and will be a brand new experience.
Marcus Lehto leads new Battlefield game
EA will publish the game, announcing it and Ridgeline Games’ formation in a press release. The Seattle-based studio will be “instrumental to building the future of the franchise,” the company noted. Lehto will serve as the project’s Game Director.
Lehto said in a statement: “It is a great honor to have the opportunity to collaborate with DICE and Ripple Effect and lead the charge on expanding the narrative, storytelling and character development opportunities in the Battlefield series.”
Lehto previously led the development studio V1 Interactive, which was shut down less than a year after launching its debut game, Disintegration. While there was moderate interest in Disintegration when it was announced — largely due to Lehto’s affiliation with it — the game failed to garner an audience. Its multiplayer servers were closed just three months after it went live.
EA will be hoping that Lehto’s take on Battlefield will be much more successful and in line with his time spent on Halo, where he served as art director for the first three Halo games, and was even responsible for Master Chief’s iconic design. Lehto joined EA last October, but up until now, it wasn’t made clear what he was working on.
“We’re continuing to invest in the future of the franchise by bringing in new talent and perspectives,” said Vince Zampella, Respawn founder and head of the Battlefield franchise. “With Marcus and his team at Ridgeline Games joining the world-class global team we have already in place, Battlefield is in the strongest position to succeed.”
