What If? episode 2 saw Star-Lord being replaced by the Black Panther, in a twist of fate that saw Yondu kidnapping T’Challa over Peter Quill. But is the late Chadwick Boseman the Star-Lord voice actor in episode 2, or did someone else take over the role? Here’s what you need to know about who voices Star-Lord in the series.
Who voices Star-Lord in What If? episode 2?
Chadwick Boseman is the voice of Star-Lord in What If? episode 2, with the series’ multiverse-meddling meaning that in this universe, he’s the Guardians of the Galaxy leader and not Black Panther. Boseman recorded his voice performance as Star-Lord before he tragically passed away in 2020.
What If? director Bryan Andrews revealed Boseman’s thoughts on reassuming the role of T’Challa in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, explaining how the actor was keen to play this alternate version of the superhero.
“We were already thinking of finding a way to do spin-offs and stuff like that of him and his crew to have these wonderful adventures, because [while] the character was so different, you can keep some of the virtue and some of the integrity and all the other important aspects of T’Challa as we know him, Black Panther, without necessarily the pressure of the kingdom Wakanda,” Andrews said.
“He [Boseman] wanted every chance he could to get T’Challa out there, and this was going to be one of those last chances. He was a super pro and wonderful and super amazing and we had no idea, you know? He brought so much to the role and he was into it and fun.”
In What If? episode 2, Star-Lord leads his own band of the Guardians of the Galaxy which includes Yondu, Thanos, and Nebula. Drax also makes a surprise cameo appearance, though he doesn’t join the crew on their adventure, as he instead serves T’Challa at the bar they frequent. Unlike Peter Quill’s Star-Lord, who isn’t exactly infamous throughout the galaxy, T’Challa is depicted as a more heroic and beloved interpretation of Star-Lord, similar to the influence he had as Wakanda’s Black Panther.
