How to get Aerogel in Subnautica Below Zero

To get Aerogel in Subnautica Below Zero, you first need to find a Gel Sack. These underwater species are located throughout the Deep Purple Vents, Lilypad Islands, and Deep Twisty Bridges biomes. Scanning a Gel Sack will unlock the Aerogel blueprint and allow the item to be crafted at the Fabricator.

As items in Below Zero go, Gel Sacks are pretty easy to find. They’re easy to spot simply because they look so gross: They’re ugly, greenish-grey blobs of matter with glowing purple pustules.

If you’re lucky, you’ll find one of these early. Some can be found across the Lilypad Islands, including the Lilypad Island Caves. Assuming you’re able to plumb greater depths, they’re also found in abundance throughout the Deep Purple Vents and Deep Twisty Bridges. These latter two biomes are also great places to farm Spiral Plant Clippings.

The first time you find a Gel Sack, scan it with the Scanner. Doing so will unlock the Aerogel blueprint. From there, you can craft it by combining one Gel Sack and one Ruby at the Fabricator.

This is definitely an item you’ll want to get as soon as possible. Aerogel is one of the primary ingredients for both the Stillsuit and the Water Filtration Machine. Together, these two are the best ways to get water in Subnautica Below Zero. Aerogel is also used in more advanced devices, including the Thermal Plant, the Prawn Suit Torpedo Arm, and the Seatruck Teleportation Module.
