ps5 update 20.02-02.50.00 patch notes

New PS5 update fixes a major issue with cross-platform games

A new PS5 update has been released, with the PlayStation 5 20.02-02.50.00 patch being deployed on the console. This new update brings with it a fix for a major issue with cross-platform games, as the PS5 would previously install the PS4 version of a game even after making the upgrade between consoles.

The new update was rolled out in the early hours of this morning, with it only requiring 860 MB of hard drive space to download. Additionally, the version number of the console has remained the same, signifying that this doesn’t include extensive changes.

PS5 update patch notes for 20.02-02.50.00

The full patch notes for this February 3, 2021 PS5 update are below:

  • The PS4 version of the game was sometimes installed from the PS4 game disc even after upgrading the disc version of a PS4 game to the PS5 version.
  • Improves system performance

While this doesn’t include any major changes, that it rectifies the common issue with PS4 game upgrades is a welcome improvement. Previously, PS5 owners looking to make the next-gen upgrade with their games would often find that the console would still install the PS4 version of the game. This meant that many would unwittingly play the last-gen versions of cross-platform games such as Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War on their current-gen console.

As always, Sony hasn’t divulged what system performance improvements this new update contains, with it keeping today’s patch notes typically brief. Another PS5 update has also been rumored for next month, with this potentially more extensive patch supposedly containing another fix for a widely reported issue with the console.

It’s been a big week for PS5 owners, with PS Plus subscribers being treated to two major free games in the form of Destruction AllStars (and its annoying voice chat) and Control: Ultimate Edition, which received our Editors’ Choice award.
