Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty Preview

Mudoken Pops! I wonder if they taste like chicken?!?!

Back in 1997, the team at Oddworld Inhabitants and GT Interactive (R.I.P.) released what many fans consider to be one of the most unique and lovable platformer games for the original Sony PlayStation, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee. We haven’t seen a new game with our hero, Abe, for the better part of a decade… until now. But while this might not be considered “new” to us “older” gamers who grew up with the PS One, it’s most definitely more than just a new coat of paint!

Everything and I mean everything has been remade for Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty from the ground up for the PlayStation 4. The team at Just Add Water along with the game’s original creator, Lorne Lanning (also the voice of Abe), has gone back and reworked the visuals, the music, the sound effects. Like I said, everything. The new game looks strikingly identical to the original. The biggest difference players of both will realize is the game has gone from a 2D sidescroller to a 2.5D sidescroller. It looks fantastic and really gives you a much broader perspective of the game world. Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty has all of the original game's charm and injects some fresh elements as well.

If you’ve played Abe’s second adventure, Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus, you should remember Abe’s ability to drop and throw bottle caps. This feature has been added to Abe’s repertoire in New ‘n’ Tasty. All of the characters who Abe interacts with will have newly added dialogue and responses. There are also messages that will pop up on-screen to offer some information on an upcoming puzzle or enemy who you’re about to encounter during load times. Some puzzles and features have been reworked to make New ‘n’ Tasty’s gameplay smoother. The game also has additional difficulty levels to either challenge you or make Abe’s escape from Rupture Farms a breeze.

I was also able to reconfirm what Lorne Lanning said back in March at GDC. If Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty can reach a quarter million in sales, they will green light a remake of Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus.  If they are able to hit a half million in sales, fans will get an all-new Oddworld game. Just before E3 got underway it was revealed that Oddworld: New ‘n Tasty would be available to buy next month on July 22 for $29.99. This price also includes PlayStation’s Cross Buy feature. If you’re as excited as I am for this remake, hopefully the legions of Oddworld fans are too. We might finally see the Brutal Balled of Fangus Klot in the not-to-distant future!
