The original Final Fantasy 7 didn’t have a New Game Plus mode. However, this feature has come to be expected for RPGs two decades down the road. New Game Plus modes add replayability and give you the chance to go back through games without having to re-level and re-equip every character, so it’d be an excellent feature for Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Fortunately, fans should be happy with what Square Enix has provided here.
Can you unlock New Game Plus in Final Fantasy 7 Remake?
Upon completion of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, you get the chance to save your game. When you load this save, you’ll have access to what is essentially New Game Plus mode.
The Final Fantasy 7 Remake New Game Plus mode is a bit different from the typical implementation of the mode. There’s a lot of freedom here, but also some confusing restrictions that can make it difficult to tell what progress gets saved and what doesn’t.
When you unlock New Game Plus in FF7 Remake, you can instantly travel to the beginning of any chapter in the game at any time through the menu. However, not everything gets saved when you switch chapters.
What is saved no matter when you switch chapters in New Game Plus:
- Items
- Gil
- Equipment
- Materia
- XP
- AP
- Trophies
- Mini-Game Leaderboards
- Enemy Intel
- Battle Intel
What is only saved by completing chapters in New Game Plus:
- Any decisions made via dialog.
- Hard Mode progress.
So, you get to carry all your character progression over no matter when you switch chapters. This is great since some battle simulator fights are only available post-game, and it’d be lame if you had to complete a whole chapter again just to save that progress.
However, if you’re looking to do something like see alternate dresses, you’ll have to make the correct dialog choices and finish the chapter. Then you’ll need to progress through chapter 9 all the way up to when the dresses are revealed. It can be frustrating as 100% completion requires you to do this several times.
