Will I get banned for time travel in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

While it can be tempted to time travel in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, by changing the Nintendo Switch date and time in System Settings, it could also pose a risk. Clearly the game isn’t intended to be played that way, but will Nintendo give bans to those who time skip? Here’s what you need to know about Animal Crossing: New Horizons time travel bans.

Can you get banned for time travel in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

No, you can’t get banned for time traveling in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. According to an interview with Washington Post, the developer doesn’t consider time traveling to be cheating. However, they do state that, “for the players to play for a very long time, and also for players to share the experience with their friends or family, we do think that playing without traveling would probably be the ideal way.”

However, if you’re like me, you might not be a big fan of waiting until the next day to proceed with the adventure. Skipping ahead allows players to continue on with the story at an accelerated rate, unlocking buildings and characters more quickly.

Nintendo has confirmed that players won’t be able to time travel to seasonal events. For example, it’s not possible to warp ahead to Christmas Day and enjoy the seasonal characters and activities. Those will need to be experienced in real-time, with the Nintendo Switch connected to the internet and a Nintendo Account linked. Time-traveling players shouldn’t miss out here, but they will need to head into the System Settings to correct the time.

Is it bad to time travel in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

While it’s unlikely that you will get banned by time traveling in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it’s possible that you will ruin the experience for yourself by getting burned out on the gameplay too quickly. Again, it’s better to stay safe than be sorry, so only time travel if you accept the risk.
