Capcom’s remade original PlayStation classic is out in exactly one month (at the time of writing) on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. With the next generation of consoles due out this holiday, however, might it be worth waiting to enjoy the ultimate versions of Resident Evil 3 on new hardware? Here’s everything you need to know about whether or not Resident Evil 3 PS5 and Resident Evil 3 Xbox Series X versions are in development.
Is the Resident Evil 3 remake coming to PS5?
Currently, no plans have been announced regarding a PS5 port of the Resident Evil 3 remake. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s out of the question, but could rather indicate that Capcom just isn’t ready to disclose anything yet.
Even if there’s not a dedicated Resident Evil 3 PlayStation 5 version, it’s possible that PlayStation manufacturer Sony’s push for greater next-gen backwards compatibility support will see the PS4 release of Resident Evil 3 fully playable on PS5.
Is the Resident Evil 3 remake coming to Xbox Series X?
In a similar fashion to the PS5 details laid out above, Capcom hasn’t announced any plans for an Xbox Series X Resident Evil 3 release at this point in time. As aforementioned, however, this in itself doesn’t rule out a potential port in the future.
Even more so than Sony, Microsoft is pushing for a fully backwards-compatible future. This means that the Xbox One version of Resident Evil 3 will very likely be supported on Xbox Series X and could possibly even feature some native upgrades, akin to those seen when playing original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on the existing Xbox One X.
Furthermore, Microsoft is offering a service whereby developers can let owners of a game on Xbox One freely upgrade to the Xbox Series X version where available. Cyberpunk 2077 is the first game to take advantage and it’s possible that Resident Evil 3 could follow suit should a next-gen version ever materialize.
