[Update] Indeed, as of this update, they have reached $166,000 of their $100,000 original goal! Click here to see the Kickstarter… it's probably higher than that right now.
Project Phoenix, self-described as "a JRPG with a squad-based RTS design" and "Kickstarter's FIRST Japan-based video game project," has almost reached its $100,000 goal. In fact, it might reach that figure by the end of the day.
Perhaps it's because acclaimed Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu is on board, along with Kiyoshi Arai's beautiful artwork, and Director/Producer Hiroaki Yuri who worked on Valkyria Chronicles and is the founder of Creative Intelligence Arts (CIA.. nice touch) which will be developing Project Phoenix. Other talent includes Vaughan Smith, game designer for L.A. Noire; Gontaro, artist for the Tenchu series; and Donna Burke, voice actress for Metal Gear Solid V.
It plans to release the title in mid-2015, and while it's primarily a single-player game, the developer will consider multiplayer and co-op if the stretch goals are reached. The story revolves around an angel who has amnesia and who must travel through Azuregard with a motley crew of class-based heroes to find out why.
The highest contribution of $10,000 will net you the chance to become a PC, NPC, or Boss in the title itself along with all the swag in the world, plus a sit-in with the developers at the studio, plus a dinner with them, plus having all that swag signed by them, plus an invite to the launch party, plus VIP access to all of the conventions and events for the game. (Whew!)
