Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated announced

In a surprising Twitter announcement, THQ Nordic revealed a teaser trailer for Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated. The re-release of the classic game was an unexpected pre-E3 reveal. While the game won’t be making an appearance at E3 2019, fans will have the teaser to tide them over until more announcements are made.

The original Battle for Bikini Bottom became something of a cult hit. Released in 2003 for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, PC, and Gameboy Advance, the game was generally well-received by critics and went on to earn “Greatest Hits” accolades thanks to an enthusiastic fanbase. The game told an original story where players got to take control of Spongebob, Patrick, and others as they fought to defend their home of Bikini Bottom from an army of robots created by the evil Plankton. It was praised for perfectly capturing the zany spirit of the show in video game form.

The teaser trailer came as the first of three planned THQ Nordic reveals leading up to E3, with the other two mystery games getting their reveals tomorrow and Friday. The nature of all three reveals was unknown. Most predictions did not remotely see this one coming, instead focusing on more timely series such as Darksiders and Metro. We’ll have to wait and see what THQ Nordic surprises us with next.

In the meantime, it looks like diehard Spongebob fans are finally getting their wishes with a remaster of the beloved Battle for Bikini Bottom after sixteen years of anticipation. Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated includes a brand new multiplayer mode, and we’ll likely get more updates and additions as more information comes to light. For now, enjoy the teaser trailer and prepare to reunite with your favorite Bikini Bottom citizens to defeat evil, defend Mr. Krabs, and keep the Krabby Patty recipe under wraps!
