Square reiterates episodic Final Fantasy 7 Remake release

Final Fantasy 7 Remake episodic release reconfirmed

Following up on the recent trailer, Square Enix confirmed that it is still sticking to its Final Fantasy 7 Remake episodic release schedule. As originally planned, the company will release the game in multiple parts, covering specific portions of the original’s story.

Square Enix reiterated Final Fantasy 7 Remake‘s episodic nature in a recent post on its Japanese site. The post confirmed that the game is still in development as “multiple parts,” as originally announced.

The company first announced Final Fantasy 7 Remake‘s episodic nature back in 2015. Its press release gave the same reason that it is stating now: the original game featured so much content, that it needs to be split up to fit into a modern game.

Despite its multi-part, episodic nature however, Square Enix feels that each part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake contains enough content as one full game. Talking to Kotaku, a Square Enix representative stated that a “[Multi-part] means instead of concluding in one entry, multiple entries are being considered in development. Each entry will have its own unique story. As a gaming experience, each entry will have the volume of content equal to a full-sized game.”

As for what this means for the game, last night’s State of Play trailer seems to hint that the first episode may focus the city of Midgar. Most of the original’s first disc took place here, before the heroes eventually leave the city to explore the world.

Indeed most of Final Fantasy 7‘s first disc tends to be pretty linear. It’s possible then that the first part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be a mostly linear affair. Square Enix promises to reveal more information this coming June. As such, fans who’re wondering or even worried about having to play an episodic Final Fantasy 7 Remake should look forward to the company’s E3 2019 press conference.
