Today, Sony Santa Monica announced a partnership with high-end collectible company Mondo to produce three pieces of God of War merchandise in celebration of the franchise’s upcoming anniversary. The collectibles in question are a limited edition screenprinted poster by artist Matt Taylor, high-quality enamel pins of Kratos and his son Atreus designed by artist Nicolas Delort, and a 1/6 scale Kratos action figure.
“I am sooooo excited about this freaking awesome poster, pins and figure from [Mondo]!” God of War game director Cory Barlog said on Twitter in response.
The poster and pins can be easily previewed online, but currently, few images exist of the Kratos figure. However, if Mondo’s existing high-end figurine output is any indication, the Kratos figure will likely be well-articulated, and will include the appropriate accessories for the character. These come alongside a new card game but not any anniversary DLC.
Mondo has plenty of experience with producing quality collectibles, having produced official artisanal posters for enormous franchises like Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, alongside cult films such as Mean Girls and Re-Animator. The company, an offshoot of the popular Alamo Drafthouse cinema chain, started as a T-shirt company before refocusing on high-quality screenprinted posters. Mondo has expanded significantly since then, going on to produce enamel pins, vinyl figures, statues, board games, tiki mugs, and quality action figures.
Although the Mondo collaboration is ostensibly to celebrate the anniversary of the entire God of War series, all of the announced merchandise currently revolves around the God of War revival, which was released last year to critical and public acclaim, including numerous Game of the Year awards. The 2018 God of War rebooted the property without completely throwing out its existing history, in a trend that has become known as the “rebootquel,” and can be predominantly seen in the film industry with movies such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens or the new Shaft film.
Interested parties should sign up for email alerts at the official Mondo x God of War page, as Mondo merchandise tends to sell out fairly quickly.
