What we’re talking about in this guide is how to ride a flying Pokemon just as you would normally walk about town. To do so, first you’re going to need one of the few Pokemon big enough to carry you and fly at the same time.

The only three Pokemon who are able to fly while being ridden on are Charizard, Dragonite, and Aerodactyl. Here’s how to get Aerodactyl, and how to get Dratini if you don’t already have them.  Pokemon like Haunter appear to float above land but this isn’t quite the same, especially for later on.

Although some other Pokemon like Pidgeot or the Legendary Birds may seem big enough to ride and even be famous for it in the anime, you’re limited to these three dragon-esque Pokemon when it comes to aerial activities.

Bearing in mind you need a Charizard, Dragonite, or Aerodactyl for this to work you can actually fly higher than the typical floating animation. Flying higher allows you to soar over water, buildings, and other obstacles. You can’t fly over barriers that are loading zones like the guard buildings surrounding Saffron City or over areas which don’t really exist.

To get this ability you need to defeat the Elite Four. After the credits, you’ll appear back at home and be informed of your new ability to fly higher.

To use this ability, choose to have your big flying buddy as the one outside of its Pokeball. You should pretty quickly notice that you’re much higher than usual. To stop flying you’ll need to put them back into their ball and move around until you can land and the change is registered.

Aside from being able to zip around cities and avoid obstacles, flying on a ride Pokemon also gives you the ability to skip battles. It’s especially useful for getting to locations like Cerulean Cave or Seafoam Islands with minimal fuss.

Perhaps one of the most important abilities that comes with flying higher, though, is the flying Pokemon battles you can get into.

While up in the sky you can encounter all sorts of typically powerful flying Pokemon. Better yet you may even get a second shot of encountering any of the three legendary birds, Zapdos, Moltress, or Articuno for a second time. If you’re very patient you can even try chaining catches to get a Shiny legendary.
