Square Enix has revealed that the Kingdom Hearts 3 opening theme song will be a collaboration between longtime contributor to the franchise Utada Hikaru and EDM producer and DJ, Skrillex. The track is the second song officially announced for the latest game in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. The title will be released January 25, 2019.
The Skrillex and Utada Hikaru song for Kingdom Hearts 3 has been revealed to be titled “Face My Fears”. Originally the Grammy award-winning DJ had come aboard the game to simply remix the previously announced Utada track, “Don’t Think Twice.” From there, due to the two artists’ friendship, the project evolved into a full song. Also lending their hand to the collaboration is producer Poo Bear. He is most famous for working on Justin Bieber’s recent music, such as “Where Are Ü Now.”
Skrillex has been noted as being a longtime Kingdom Hearts fan. The official Twitter for the franchise confirmed this as such when it announced this new collaboration. In addition to this, the artist has referenced the franchise multiple times in past interviews, such as in the one below. Some fans have even theorized that the DJ’s stage name is a reference to the games. This is because the name “Skrillex” follows the naming conventions of the series enemy type of Nobodies. When a person in the Kingdom Hearts universe produces a Nobody, the new being gets a name which is an anagram of the original person’s title and has an X in it. Therefore, Skrillex could be making a subtle reference with his alias.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is the latest entry into the long-running franchise. It combines the worlds and characters of both Disney properties and the Final Fantasy games into one universe and story. The first entry to the series was Kingdom Hearts and was released on the PS2 in 2002.
