CD Projekt Red has announced a Thronebreaker The Witcher Tales release date for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The upcoming The Witcher spinoff game is a standalone single-player RPG set in the world that Geralt of Rivia calls home. It will initially launch earlier for the PC on October 23 via digital distribution platform GOG, while the console versions of the game will arrive later on December 4, 2018.
To clarify, Thronebreaker The Witcher Tales won’t be an action RPG in the vein of The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. According to the developer, the game can be described as a “single-player role-playing game set in the world of The Witcher that combines narrative-driven exploration with unique puzzles and card battle mechanics.” This isn’t very surprising, considering that it originally began development as a single-player story campaign intended for Gwent The Witcher Card Game.

Thronebreaker The Witcher Tales will star Meve, a war-veteran queen of two Northern Realms, namely Lyria and Rivia. The story will begin when the protagonist is faced by the invasion of the Nilfgaardian Empire. Players will have to build an army, embark on epic quests, and visit never-before-seen locations in the world of The Witcher. The gameplay will be similar to the skill-based battle system from Gwent The Witcher Card Game.
At the time of writing, the developer has not revealed any in-game screenshots from Thronebreaker The Witcher Tales. However, we might know what to expect from last year’s trailer of Thronebreaker. Keep in mind that the trailer below was released at a time when the game was still being developed as a story campaign for Gwent The Witcher Card Game. Therefore, it might not be indicative of what Thronebreaker would actually look like when it releases later this year. We’ll have to wait for an official first look at the game from CD Projekt Red.
