Stellaris, the popular 4X grand-strategy game developed by Paradox Interactive, will be coming to consoles. Tantalus Media is porting this new edition of the game and it will hit the PS4 and Xbox One at a currently unknown date in the future. The console version will be playable at the Gamescom conference in Germany this week.
The newly announced Stellaris: Console Edition promises to bring the full experience of the 4X game to the two consoles. Tantalus Media has ported games like Cities: Skyline and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. It will come with the 1.7 version of the game, and its deluxe edition will include the “Plantoids Species Pack, Leviathans Story Pack, and the Utopia Expansion.” Paradox Interactive also boasts that this game will be bring “the grand strategy genre to consoles for the first time ever.” The announcement also came with a trailer.
Daniel Moregård, game director at Paradox Interactive, noted in the press release for the game that “Grand Strategy is often considered a niche genre even on the PC, but…[he] believe[s] that while a console audience exists, a game like Stellaris simply hasn’t made it to those platforms yet.” Moregård also stated that the console version of the game will receive “continued DLC and support after launch.”
Stellaris follows the 4X design of strategy games, emphasizing exploring, expanding, exploiting, and exterminating various parts of the digital environment in its gameplay. The game tasks players with taking their own galactic empire from “their first steps outside of their home system” to “their race across the universe.” The game has sold over 1.5 million copies as of February 2018 since its launch in 2016. Our review of the game praised it for its accessibility and its freedom of choice.
The game originally was released worldwide on PC, Linux, and MacOS May 9, 2016.
