Gamescom 2018: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080, RTX 2070 Revealed

Nvidia has just announced the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080, and RTX 2070, the first of its Turing-based architecture gaming GPUs after a long battle against leaks. At an event in Cologne, Germany this afternoon, the green team finally put an official name to its first next-gen gaming GPU since the Pascal line-up. It’s the first time Nvidia has put out a gaming-grade graphics card without the GTX moniker since 2008.

The first of the Turing architecture gaming GPUs to land will, in fact, be the GeForce RTX 2080, but it’s coming with its more powerful sibling the RTX 2080 Ti at the same time. A GeForce RTX 2070 was announced, too, but will release at a later date.

Heavily featuring Nvidia’s new Ray Tracing RTX platform, the GeForce RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti are both set to release “on or before” September 20, 2018 with the less capable (but more affordable) GeForce RTX 2070 coming a little further down the line. Most of the details were revealed through Nvidia’s own website ahead of Jason Huang’s official announcement.

Founders Edition cards are set to return, too, sporting a twin fan shroud rather than the single “blower” style cooler seen on last-generation Founders Edition GeForce GPUs.

Nvidia GeForce RTX Prices and Pre-Orders

Prices were added to the page a little later, and are now confirmed as the following:

  • GeForce RTX 2080 Ti ($999)
  • GeForce RTX 2080 ($699)
  • GeForce RTX 2070 ($499)

Pre-orders are already live on the Nvidia webpage, with a limit of two cards per buyer on the 2080 and 2080 Ti variants.

Nvidia GeForce RTX Gaming and Performance

Nvidia used Shadow of the Tomb Raider to flaunt its next-gen tech. Past games in the series put Nvidia’s own TressFX technology to work to enhance the realism and flow of hair and fur, and the tech featured prominently in the PC port of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XV late last year.

Now, Nvidia’s newest Ray Tracing platform will work to improve lighting across the board in the upcoming sequel. There was even an exclusive new trailer for the game to really hammer in the partnership between Eidos and Nvidia.

Battlefield V and Metro Exodus were also shown on-stage to demonstrate the effect the RTX pipeline in in-game scenes. Even Asseto Corsa got some time in the spotlight.

The Turing GPU architecture aboard each GeForce RTX card is said to bring “up to 6X faster performance” in your favorite games, with “real-time ray tracing” and “powerful AI enhanced graphics.”
