“Big” 2K Game Releasing in 2019, Rumors Hint at BioShock or Borderlands

Take-Two Interactive has been generating massive levels of hype for its upcoming game, Red Dead Redemption 2. One of 2018’s most anticipated games, it will be releasing in October. Although that’s merely a few months away at this point, the company’s CEO is already teasing 2019’s frontline title, which will be a “big” title from 2K Games. What could it be? Two words (and a number): BioShock or Borderlands 3.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Take-Two Interactive Strauss Zelnick said: “Obviously this year we have RDR2 as a frontline title, next year we have a big title coming from 2K that’s a frontline title.” The potential ramifications of that one sentence are huge, as there are several possibilities of what that big 2K Games title could be. There have actually been multiple developments earlier in 2018, which point to a possible new installment of BioShock or the highly-demanded Borderlands 3.

New BioShock 2019 Release Date?

The last installment in the iconic franchise was BioShock Infinite, which was released in 2013. Five years is a long time and it looks like gamers might be facing a Big Daddy again soon. Hopes for a BioShock sequel reignited earlier in April 2018, when a report by Kotaku’s Jason Schreier said that problems at Hangar 13 caused 2K Games to funnel the developer’s resources into working on a BioShock title. The new BioShock game is supposedly even confirmed to have been in development under the code-name “Parkside.”

In May 2018, a report gave further credibility to the possibility of a BioShock 2019 release date. Despite its reported problems, Hangar 13 opened a new studio in Brighton, UK, with the purpose of assisting in the development of a new unannounced AAA console game. This new Hangar 13 studio might very well be the “top-secret 2K Games studio” that is reportedly working on the “top-secret new BioShock game.”

New Borderlands 3 Release Date?

Take-Two Interactive also earned our attention in May 2018 when it announced in a financial conference call that a “highly-anticipated title from one of 2K’s biggest franchises, which had been planned for release during the current fiscal year, is now planned for launch during fiscal 2020 to allow for additional development time.” That aforementioned fiscal year will take place from April 2019 to March 2020.

Borderlands 3 is all but officially confirmed now, as GearBox CEO Randy Pitchford himself tweeted back in 2015 about hiring people to start working on a potential Borderlands sequel. That was over two years ago but fans have not given up. However, it was still disappointing when there was no sign of Borderlands 3 at E3 2018 last month. The possibility of a surprise reveal for this game remains probable.

Both BioShock and Borderlands 3 are viable candidates. Nevertheless, the real game could potentially be anything from a new XCOM game to a totally brand new IP. Keep in mind that this should be regarded as mere speculation and deduction. Here’s hoping Take-Two Interactive will be revealing more information and details in the near future.
