Square Enix has officially announced Shadow of the Tomb Raider. It will be released for the PS4, Xbox One and PC on September 14th, 2018. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is described by Square Enix on its official site as the experience of “Lara Croft’s defining moment as she becomes the Tomb Raider.” Yesterday, we reported that the trailer for the game was already leaked, confirming the rumored title and the platforms on which it would be releasing.
In the new trailer below, we can see Lara Croft running through the jungle. The solar eclipse glimpsed in the trailer with Lara standing atop the ruins of temples might indicate the “Shadow” theme of the game. No actual gameplay was shown in the trailer since trailer footage only contains pre-rendered cutscenes from the game.
Square Enix has not divulged any other details regarding Shadow of the Tomb Raider, except Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics are both involved in the development of the game. This will be a clear departure from the previous two Tomb Raider games including 2013’s Tomb Raider and 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider, both of which were exclusively developed by Crystal Dynamics.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider will no longer be a timed exclusive as was the case for the previous Tomb Raider game. Rise of the Tomb Raider was initially released only on the Xbox One before it was finally released on the PS4 a year later.
The Tomb Raider site also teases a puzzle for players to solve, which will be released at 9 am PDT on Monday next week. The puzzle will undoubtedly reveal more information about the upcoming game. There is a countdown on the site as well, indicating that we have about 42 days until the official reveal event on April 27th, 2018. Square Enix has even gone as far as providing a button to add the event’s date to our Google calendars.
Players from the US, UK, and a few European countries can already pre-order the game here. So far only the standard edition is available for pre-order, with no information on any other editions. However, the page does state that all the details regarding the pre-order incentives and SKUs will be revealed at the reveal event.
