Nintendo Reveals Sales Figures, DS Software Sales Approaching One Billion

While smartphones have definitely taken a huge chunk out of the portable gaming market, it appears Nintendo's portable gaming machines are still a force to be reckoned with. Earlier today, the company released their life-to-date software and hardware sales numbers for the Wii, DS and 3DS, and things are looking pretty good.

Check out this nifty little chart which outlines all of the pertinent data.

As you can see, software sales for both the Wii and DS are quite astounding, with total unit sales clocking in at 826.93 million and 908.79 million, respectively. The 3DS is also picking up steam, with a total of 19 million hardware sales since its launch last year. And with the upcoming release of the XL model, you can be sure those numbers will climb much higher.

In addition, Nintendo announced in their Q1 earnings that the company's losses are shrinking (from $326 million to $220.4 million) and that it's no longer selling the 3DS at a loss. Could Nintendo be making the comeback it so desperately needs? Here's to hoping the Wii U continues that trend.
