Keychron continues its journey into Hall Effect technology with the Q5 HE, a full-size keyboard that features a dedicated number pad. While the Q1 HE and Q3 HE that I’ve reviewed previously were designed for users desiring a compact form factor, the Q5 HE combines magnetic switches with the practicality of a full-size layout. With full-sized keyboards becoming increasingly rare, Keychron aims to deliver something special. This is my review.
The big brother
With the Q5 HE, the standout feature is its full-size layout, complete with a dedicated number pad. For gamers, professionals, and spreadsheet warriors, the additional keys are a welcome addition, making it perfect for multitasking across work and play.
Of course, the Q5 HE also boasts Gateron’s Hall Effect magnetic switches, offering adjustable actuation points that users can fine-tune to their preference. They are especially powerful in first-person shooters where it becomes easier to strafe side to side while remaining accurate. Another example of its functionality is a short press causing a video game character to walk, while a deeper press makes them run.
These switches might not have the same satisfying tactile feel or sound as more traditional switches, but the Hall Effect functionality will more than make up for that for game-focused users.
Built to last
The Q5 HE’s aluminum chassis feels incredibly premium. It seems as though it will last forever, with its sheer heft keeping it firmly in place on a desktop. Of course, that heft could be seen as a con for users with portability in mind.
Though solid on the outside, the double-gasket design and acoustic dampening layers add a pleasant bounce to each keystroke. It’s a surprisingly gentle experience, though this doesn’t hamper the responsiveness.
Choose your connection
Like its smaller siblings, the Q5 HE offers three connectivity options: wired USB-C, Bluetooth, and 2.4GHz wireless. The wireless modes perform exceptionally well, offering lag-free performance in gaming and other tasks.
Worthy of note
While the Q5 HE shines in many areas, there are a few limitations to consider. The high-profile design might feel uncomfortable during long sessions without a wrist rest, which isn’t included in the box. Additionally, the proprietary Hall Effect switches mean you’re limited to Keychron’s magnetic switch options, so switch experimentation is off the table.

Final Verdict
At $229, the Keychron Q5 HE offers a premium blend of build quality, advanced technology, and practicality. With its Hall Effect magnetic switches, full-size layout, and versatile connectivity, it caters to a range of users, from gamers to professionals. While its weight and limited switch options might not suit everyone, it remains a strong contender for those seeking innovation and functionality in a full-size keyboard.
