Battlefield 5 BR: What to Expect From Firestorm Battle Royale

Battlefield 5 is coming in November, and much like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 it features its own challenger to Fortnite, a battle royale mode called Firestorm. But how will Battlefield 5 BR be different from the likes of Black Ops 4‘s Blackout mode, Fortnite or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds? Here’s what you can expect from Battlefield 5 royale.

What to Expect From Battlefield 5 BR

Battlefield 5 battle royale is called Firestorm, which is because the usual battle royale mechanic of map shrinkage is being caused by a literal firestorm. The mode will include 64 players in 16 squads of four, so Firestorm may not be playable solo. It will feature “the biggest Battlefield map to date” according to the game’s website, vehicles such as Panzer tanks and transports, and will even have destructible buildings.

Unlike other battle royale games or modes, Firestorm will have objectives other than just survival. These will operate similar to Battlefield‘s usual Conquest mode, except these change depending on your area on the map. We don’t have any examples yet, but completing these objectives will apparently give your squad access to some very valuable gear. Being team-based and objective-focused should certainly help to distinguish Firestorm from other battle royale games. You can get a glimpse of it in the trailer below.

Who is making Battlefield 5 Firestorm?

Perhaps the most surprising thing about Firestorm is that it is not being developed by Battlefield creators DICE. They’re handling the game’s other modes and are supervising, but the Battlefield 5 battle royale mode is actually being developed by Criterion, the makers of Burnout and recent Need For Speed games. They previously helped DICE on last year’s Star Wars: Battlefront II with the vehicle and ship combat, but this is the first time they’ve been allowed to develop such a sizeable component for a DICE title. We’ll be able to find out how they did when Battlefield 5 comes out on November 20.
