The Witcher Netflix release date

The Witcher Netflix Release Date: When Will The Witcher Netflix Series Launch?

There’s a Netflix TV series based on The Witcher on the way, and while it’s more closely based on the books it’s CD Projekt RED’s games that made the series popular outside of Poland. Heck, even the name “The Witcher” was made up by CD Projekt, so we’re considering the show an honorable video game TV series. But what is The Witcher Netflix release date? Do we know it yet? Let’s find out.

What is The Witcher Netflix Series Release Date?

Previously showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich said for us not to expect The Witcher Netflix series before 2020, and that was a guess. Since then, however, things have been going very smoothly for the show. The first script was written, the number of episodes was decided upon (eight), and the show took a big leap forward with the casting of Man of Steel and Mission Impossible: Fallout actor Henry Cavill as the titular Witcher, Geralt of Rivia.

Hissrich has now revealed via Twitter that Netflix has moved up The Witcher, so the launch date for the series is now 2019. Yes, that’s just next year. Expect it probably a little later in the year perhaps, but we can almost certainly expect more casting announcements and maybe even a trailer very soon.

What is The Witcher Netflix TV series?

The series will be based on The Last Wish, the first of author Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher books and canonically the first part of Geralt’s tale (the games are set after the final novel, The Lady in the Lake). The series will have eight episodes, and Henry Cavill will portray Geralt of Rivia.

So far he’s been the only cast member announced, but expect announcements for characters such as the sorceror Yennefer and child of destiny Ciri soon, probably later this year. Mark Hamill has expressed an interest in playing Vesemir, the elderly Witcher teacher, and we wouldn’t be surprised if he got the role.

The showrunner is Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who was writer and executive producer for the highly successful Marvel Netflix series Daredevil and The Defenders. Netflix describes the show as, “the witcher, Geralt, a mutated monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.” That sums up both the books and games pretty well.
