Modern Warfare realism mode

Modern Warfare | Where is realism mode?

Publisher Activision and developer Infinity Ward recently released a patch for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) reintroducing the night map variants that were controversially removed at launch. Although night maps are now back, their reintroduction alongside the NVG playlist seems to have come at the cost of the popular Modern Warfare realism mode. With this beloved multiplayer mode now missing in action, should disgruntled fans expect to see it return? And if so, when?

Is realism mode coming back to Modern Warfare?

Modern Warfare realism mode

Realism is a hardcore match variant that removes all HUD elements and lowers player health, meaning that a single headshot proves deadly. This makes it highly popular amongst military shooter fans that like to approach gameplay in a more careful and methodical fashion, while also being stooped in greater realism.

NVG sees these same mechanics carried over, but for many, the overall experience just isn’t considered to be the same. As such, there’s been some fan backlash over the decision, but such is the nature of a rotating playlist system. Although it’s an inconvenience for those looking to play realism mode in the here and now, it’s very likely that it’ll reenter the Modern Warfare playlist rotation in the future. The development team has been quick to respond to negative fan feedback thus far, so they may even already be looking into its swift reintroduction.

Either way, there’s a consolation prize for fans of punishing multiplayer modes in general.  Hardcore variants are now available in quick play, and here’s how to access them:

  1. From the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare main menu, select “Multiplayer.”
  2. Navigate to the “Filter” option beside “Quick Play.”
  3. Swap from “Filtered” to “Hardcore” playlists by following the on-screen button prompt.
  4. Deselect any hardcore game types you don’t wish to play.
  5. Back out and then hit “Quick Play” to matchmake in the selected hardcore playlists.
