animal crossing new horizons axolotl

Nintendo, please give Animal Crossing: New Horizons an axolotl villager

Nintendo, it would meanalotl if I could befriend an axolotl in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

I understand that, as a general rule of thumb, Animal Crossing tends to only include well-known animals. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, frogs were the lone species representing amphibians. But that needs to end. I want to move in next to an axolotl, invite them over to my house, and then wait for them to awkwardly sit on all of my chairs before quietly leaving.

“Axolotls don’t have as much brand recognition as frogs,” Nintendo would probably argue if they were, hypothetically-speaking, trapped in a room with me while I delivered my pro-axolotl Powerpoint presentation. “Yes,” I would reply in this totally hypothetical situation, “but look at this gif of one belatedly responding to a piece of food being dropped on its wonderful head.”

Then I would show them the gif.

Wonderful.

Wonderful.

The Animal Crossing community has already been hypothesizing what an axolotl villager could look like. There’s original artwork depicting one of the little guys wearing a turtleneck on Reddit, followed by commenters explaining how they would totally purchase this blessed creation if Nintendo were to sell it as DLC. And I would, too. Financially speaking, I don’t know how far I’d go to ensure the addition of an axolotl in my Animal Crossing: New Horizons. But rest assured, it would be too far.

So why the axolotl? Here are five fast axolotl facts to explain the importance of this underrated salamander:

  • According to National Geographic, axolotls are one of the most scientifically studied salamanders in the world. I don’t know how much studying takes place with the other salamanders, but the point remains; they’re THE MOST INTERESTING SALAMANDER.
  • They’re a critically endangered species, so an appearance in New Horizons would raise axolotl awareness. We need to be more aware of the axolotl.
  • The axolotl retains its larval features throughout adulthood. That means that it’s basically a constant baby. Very cute.
  • They permanently live in water. This is a bit of a problem considering that Animal Crossing‘s villagers need to be on land, but if the game can feature a talking alpaca that sells me clothes and an owl running a museum, it can give me an axolotl that lives in a house.
  • They don’t have eyelids. This isn’t crucial information, but that’s pretty neat.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons was already delayed from 2019 to its current release date of March 20, 2020. I do not know if this delay was related to them shoving more axolotls into the game, but I hope so. In fact, I hope that there are almost too many axolotls in New Horizons, to the point where come the next Animal Crossing game, the community will have to campaign for Nintendo to take some axolotls out of the next installment. It’s been a long time coming, and axolotls deserve to be over-saturated.

Nintendo, if axolotls aren’t in consideration for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, then I understand. The game is nearing its release, has likely nearly already gone gold, and it’s probably too late to fit them in at such short notice. But please, if you are planning to release New Horizons DLC in the future, then you must take the kindly axolotl into consideration.

I appreciate your time.

Thanksalotl.
