Why You Should Return to Diablo 3 For the Necromancer Update

It’s been a long time coming. The Necromancer update for Diablo 3 has arrived in all its glory, with new class and all.

Diablo 3 hasn’t necessarily found itself in the spotlight for a while. That has changed instantaneously with today’s patch, spurring a flood of new and returning players to see what the game is like in 2017.

We’ve played Necromancer both on Beta and live clients, and have a lot of good things to say about it.

Necromancer Is Hellish Fun

Although it may appear to be similar to the Witch Doctor, the Necromancer is very much a class of its own. It’s the first true hybrid class, capable of serving as an excellent melee threat or ranged damage dealer.

Its skills are visually impressive, to a point where it can be regarded as a new era of class when compared to the others. Gore-ridden corpse explosions and ethereal swipes of scythes and claws decimate opponents in spectacular fashion, pushing the game’s engine to its limits.

Perhaps Necromancer’s greatest success is how many minions it can raise to do its evil bidding. It’s common to see dozens of skeletons, spirits, and golems follow the Necromancer around as it swarms enemies in Zerg-like fashion. In this way, it’s true to the spirit of the original Necromancer, to a point where classic Diablo players are enthusiastic about the release.

Most of all, the Necromancer is a lot of fun to play. It’s technically challenging to play effectively, but rewarding. This difficulty is particularly great for veteran players who want something that requires a bit more thought and precision than the other classes. Due to its hybrid nature, it can also be built to fill several roles. This is great when grinding during long sessions, if only to diversify your gameplay style and keep things fresh

It’s Not Just About Necromancer

If you’re like me, then you have no intention of maining the Necromancer in the long run. It’s just a fun new class to play around with for a few weeks before returning to your go-to. And really, there’s no harm in that.

Thankfully, this patch includes a whole lot more. For example, Challenge Rifts are finally a thing, allowing for progression through a weekly static dungeon. A snapshot of a character is made before players can test their skills in an environment that foregoes the heavy RNG-nature of Diablo 3 for something more predictable, but punishing.

There are also the new zones of The Moors and The Temple of the Firstborn, providing some much-needed scenery for what is technically an aged game. There are also new bounties to participate in for those leveling up or just looking to grind away for new loot.

What Else Are You Going to Play?

Look. Unless you’re busy playing Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind, or busy cutting through your growing backlog, then chances that you aren’t being entertained properly by this Summer’s releases.

So here you have a great game by none other than Blizzard Entertainment with what could be argued is its third biggest post-release evolution beyond the removal of the Auction House and the Reaper of Souls expansion. It’s a tremendous package, and one that even comes equipped with a couple character slots, stash tabs, and some neat vanity items. At $14.99, it’s an easy recommendation.

We’ll see you in Sanctuary.
