Govee AI Sync Box 2 Review

Govee AI Sync Box 2 Review

The Govee AI Sync Box 2 is here to make a splash with its HDMI 2.1 support and “AI recognition technology” ready to sync with other Govee and Matter-compatible devices. For those looking for the bleeding-edge RGB lighting tech to match your high-end display, Govee’s latest innovation promises high quality, albeit at a high price point. Is it worth the cost? This is my review.

HDMI 2.1

When it comes to premium RGB lighting, Govee is keen to push the envelope. With the AI Sync Box 2, users are treated to HDMI 2.1 support, meaning compatibility with displays pushing 8K 60Hz or 4K 144 Hz. This is particularly huge for PC gamers with high-end systems or those looking to future-proof their RGB setup for upcoming console generations.

Additionally, features like Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) are supported and help to reduce lag and screen tearing.

Enhanced ‘AI’ immersion

“AI” has been the top buzzword of tech companies in recent years and with Govee it’s no different. The CogniGlow AI recognition technology aims to automatically detect and react to in-game moments, such as winning moments, adding an extra level of immersion and excitement.

The light strips themselves have also been upgraded to include 75 LEDs per meter. This means fewer gaps between the lights, enabling a smoother overall look and transitions between colors. It also makes for a brighter experience, which is always nice.

Easy setup

Govee AI Sync Box 2 Review

For those already invested in Govee or other smart home devices, the AI Sync Box 2’s compatibility with both AI DreamView and Matter means it can embed relatively easily within an existing setup.

Setting up the AI Sync Box 2 is simple enough, though I’d encourage users to take that extra bit of time to be careful when sticking the strips down. You don’t want to rush here, as perfect placement earns perfect results.

A winning application

Govee AI Sync Box 2 Review

When everything is stuck down and plugged into the box, it’s time to load up the app and configure the lighting setup. Govee has continued to improve its app and, as of late 2024, it is in a well-polished state. It’s very easy to make adjustments and get the lighting just right.

When it comes to gaming on the reactive lighting, this impressed me more than I thought it would. Previously, I’ve always disabled any “reactive effects” after the review process, as I found them distracting. However, after giving the AI Sync Box 2 a chance, the transitions between effects feel less jarring. Perhaps I’m mistaken and have simply become more accepting of them, but it does feel like Govee has made some improvements here.

Consider this

Govee AI Sync Box 2 Review

One hiccup that could impact some users is the reliance on an HDMI input. If you use your TV’s built-in software to run apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, etc., then the Govee AI Sync Box 2 is unable to “see” that. However, almost everyone I know uses an Amazon Fire Stick or other HDMI device rather than TV software, which works perfectly with Govee’s latest box.

Final Verdict

Starting at $239.99, the Govee AI Sync Box 2’s price is hard to ignore. It’s an expensive investment for what is ultimately RGB lighting. However, if you feel like lighting plays a huge role in your enjoyment of media, then Govee’s new box has an impressive range of features tailored to the latest HDMI 2.1 tech, while also being ready for future devices.

If you’re looking at reviews for this product, then you are probably already in the camp of “RGB Enthusiast.” If you can appreciate the benefits of high-quality lighting that reacts to the media on your screen, then Govee is the king of this realm. Just be prepared to fork out the cash for the privilege.
