Nintendo Switch Sales on Track to Become Best-Selling Console Ever

Although it’s very much coming to the end of its lifecycle, it seems Nintendo Switch sales are not slowing down too much just yet. In fact, it looks as though the hybrid system could soon become the best-selling video games console of all time.

Nintendo Switch sales could keep going up

Mat Piscatella, Executive Director at the market research firm Circana, has said the Switch is catching up to the PlayStation 2‘s lifetime sales. At just 1.1 million units behind the iconic Sony console, we could be seeing Nintendo overtake just as we’re about to head into a new gaming generation.

Piscatella then adds that “no, the console market isn’t doomed,” especially given that even the likes of the Xbox Series X|S is doing well, being close to Xbox 360‘s life-to-date sales.

While it’s tough to know whether the Switch will surpass the PS2, a response to user @nonspecificgen1 suggests that the former will beat the latter before the end of the year, according to Piscatella.

If it does, it could be due to the new Hyrule edition of the console, which is scheduled to release on September 26. As a result, we may see Nintendo Switch sales go up in the closing moments of this generation.

In its lifetime, the PlayStation 2 sold between 155 and 160 million units worldwide. Currently, the Switch is the third best-selling console ever, with the Nintendo DS in second place. If the Switch does sell more than 1.1 million machines – especially taking into account the Hyrule model – it would take the number one spot. An historical moment for gaming in general.

Currently, we don’t know what’s happening with the Switch 2 (as it’s being referred to). Whether an official announcement and release date will see Nintendo Switch sales surge or drop remains to be seen, but we’ve been told the follow-up console will get officially announced before the end of 2024.
