Phil Spencer Says Xbox Strategy Doesn’t ‘Hinge on People Moving All Digital’

We’re living in an era in which entertainment is fast becoming digital only, and the head of Xbox has given his stance on what the future holds. Along with the growing number of layoffs, Phil Spencer acknowledges that the video game industry is evolving.

Consoles are the “last electronic device” to have physical drives

In a recent interview with Game File, Spencer was questioned on a number of topics that are prevalent in gaming right now. Everything from an uptick in cloud software to the aforementioned job cuts were part of the discussion.

One other thing that seemed quite pressing was what the future holds for Xbox in terms of digital vs. physical games. When asked where the company stands on this, Spencer said that while the team supports physical media, “We don’t have a need to drive that disproportionate to customer demand.”

He also says that Xbox aims to “deliver on the things that a majority of the customers want,” adding that “a majority of our customers are buying games digitally” these days.

However, when pressed further about whether there’s a possibility that the company will go entirely digital, Spencer says, “Our strategy does not hinge on people moving all-digital,” saying that “getting rid of physical, that’s not a strategic thing for us.”
