R.I.P. Red Faction Series

Red Faction has been going strong since the PS2 days and has seen releases across a number of different platforms (even the Nokia N-Gage). The last game to release was the very recent Red Faction: Armageddon. The name Armageddon was fitting as it really is really was the end of the world for Red Faction.

THQ CEO Brian Farrell told investors that Red Faction: Armageddon "did not resonate with a sufficiently broad console gaming audience" and that the publisher would not "carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way". Farrell then went on to explain why:

In today's hit-driven, core gaming business, even highly-polished titles with a reasonable following like Red Faction face a bar that continues to move higher and higher.

In other words, it didn't sell well enough to continue the franchise.

The end of the series doesn't spell the end for Volition. The studio currently has its hands full with Saints Row: The Third and is working in collaboration with Guillermo del Toro on his upcoming Insane game.
