Super Mario Bros. Movie Trailer Reaction: Fans Diss Chris Pratt’s “Weird” Mario Accent

The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer dropped today (October 6, 2022) and fans wasted no time in reacting to the accent, or lack of, that Chris Pratt has adopted to take on the role of the titular Koopa-stomping plumber. While some enjoyed Jack Black’s take on the villainous Bowser, Pratt’s performance left a lot to be desired. Here’s what those taking to Twitter after the teaser reveal thought…

Chris Pratt fails to impress with his accent in the first Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer

Many wondered if Chris Pratt would be adopting an Italian accent for his turn as Super Mario, but it appears that he is simply going with his natural voice to play the video game character. Saying that it has been “a lifelong dream” to take on this role, you would be forgiven for expecting something a little more in line with the Nintendo icon’s origins from the actor.

Though the animation style is stunning, with many of the characters looking as though they have been ripped straight from one of your favorite Nintendo consoles, the Mario design is perhaps the furthest deviation from the man we have all grown accustomed to. The reaction to that change is, predictably, one of worry from long time fans.

Still, there was a lot to celebrate in the teaser. It ended with confirmation that the film will hit theaters on April 7, 2023, before also showing off Luigi’s inclusion, and teasing the introduction of his Haunted Mansion to the big screen. We also got a glimpse at Bowser’s army, an icy kingdom inhabited by penguins, the Mushroom Kingdom, and Toad.

In other news, Anya Taylor-Joy’s Princess Peach was shown in a Super Mario Bros. Movie leak, and Blizzard were left apologizing for the rough Overwatch 2 launch.
