A decade is a long time, so as you would expect, much has taken place in King’s Landing and beyond when we re-join the roster of complicated characters 10 years on. Perhaps the most noticeable event is the arrival of more Targaryen children. Rhaenyra and Laenor now share three sons called Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey. It quickly becomes clear that Rhaenyra has been enjoying an affair with Ser Harwin Strong of the City Watch, and the children’s appearance suggests that all three are his sons. As the eldest child, Jacaerys is heir to the Iron Throne after his mother Rhaenyra. Laenor, meanwhile, is enjoying an affair with the knight, Ser Qarl Correy.

The last 10 years have hardened Queen Alicent. She fears that her two sons, Aegon and Aemon, are in danger of being put to the sword if Rhaenyra ever ascends to the Iron Throne. It’s a worry she unloads onto her eldest boy Aegon, insisting that he must prepare to one day become King and challenge his half-sister for the crown. For now, Aegon isn’t interested in ruling over the Seven Kingdoms, but Lord Commander of the Kingsguard Ser Criston Cole, who has developed a deep connection with Alicent as her main confidante, continues to pay special attention to the youngster and his training for battle.

Elsewhere, Prince Daemon Targaryen has remarried, taking Lady Laena Velaryon to be his wife. The couple has spent time traveling with their twin daughters Baela and Rhaena Targaryen, currently residing in Pentos. Those who rule there are worried about the resurgence of the Triarchy at the Stepstones, who are thought to have forged an alliance with House Martell of Dorne. This is a worry that has also made its way to King’s Landing, with Rhaenyra blaming the lack of defenses sent by the capital to maintain control over the Stepstones.
