Many players are wondering how to co-op in Dark Souls 3. It's a common issue considering that the system isn't explained, and as a matter of fact the item required to initiate co-op isn't automatically provided like in previous Souls games. That said, let's go over how to start playing with others in Dark Souls 3.
First, you will need a White Sign Soapstone if you hope to be summoned by another player. This item can be purchased for 500 souls in Firelink Shrine, and is a one-time purchase. The vendor can be found just right of the path leading to the Blacksmith.
Once you have a White Sign Soapstone, you can allow yourself to be summoned into another player's game by using the item out in the game world. Upon using the item, a white, glowing sign will be placed on the ground which only Embered players can see. If they choose to click on the sign, they can summon you into their lobby. For the best results, place your summon sign somewhere easy to view, preferably by a bonfire or outside of a boss fight location.
Note that when you join another player's game, you will not suffer a penalty if you die, although the host will. Your goal will be to help the host clear the boss for the area that he or she is in, and if you are successful then both you and the host will will receive a large sum of souls.
If you would like to summon someone else for help, then you'll need to be in Lord of Cinder form, which is denoted by a fiery logo on the top left corner of the screen and fire running through your armor. You can achieve this by killing a boss, or by consuming an Ember. While in Lord of Cinder form you have 1.4x health and can view summon signs on the ground.
When you summon another player they can assist you without you suffering from a penalty, handicap, or increased difficulty. Due to this, co-op play is considered a powerful way to defeat difficult bosses that players get stuck on. You will want to save as many Embers as possible as you play through Dark Souls 3 to enter Lord of Cinder form for some of the game's most challenging bosses, several of which are toward the latter chapters of the game.
Voice chat can be enabled in co-op sessions assuming you have it enabled in the Settings menu. This new feature is one major perk of multiplayer being host on dedicated servers.
