Will GTA Trilogy remove licensed music tracks or radio stations?

Will the GTA Trilogy bring back iconic music from the original games? It’s a question that many GTA fans are wondering, after the latest trailer launched today. GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas contain some of the most iconic music tracks and radio stations in the franchise. As such, it’s no surprise that players want to see them return, for a dose of nostalgia. Will they be back in the GTA Trilogy? Let’s find out.

Will the GTA Trilogy remove classic tracks and radio stations?

At the moment, it’s hard to say whether the GTA Trilogy will remove licensed music tracks or radio stations. However, you can imagine that some iconic hits will be back, but it’ll likely be on a case-by-case basis.

That’s because the various licenses and contracts between Rockstar and the track’s license owners can be complicated. With each game containing hundreds of licensed songs, it would cost a pretty penny to renew these contracts for the new remakes. Of course, Rockstar could do that — especially given the dose of nostalgia these songs would bring — but we won’t know for sure until the game launches on November 11.

However, there is reason for fans to be hopeful. In a blog post on the Rockstar website, they mention the “unforgettable music” from the original trilogy. That’s not confirmation that all the soundtracks will be the same as before. However, it proves that music is a consideration with the remasters.

That said, GTA’s history with music licenses is one fraught with trouble. In 2018, a large chunk of music was removed from GTA IV’s radio stations, when the licenses expired. The same happened in GTA V when the game was released for PS4 and Xbox One in 2014, when several tracks were taken out. We’ll have to wait and see, but don’t hold your breath for iconic GTA songs to make a comeback.
