Is there going to be a Shang-Chi HBO Max release? The long-awaited next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is nearly upon us, in fact the Shang-Chi release date is tomorrow, September 3, for most places. However, will Shang-Chi be coming to HBO Max too? Is there any sort of Shang-Chi streaming option for people at home who don’t want to go to theaters, as there was for Black Widow? Let’s see.
Will there be a Shang-Chi HBO Max release?
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will not be released on HBO Max at any point.
This is because Marvel Studios, who made Shang-Chi, is owned by Disney — and Disney has its own streaming service, Disney Plus. HBO Max is owned by Disney’s competitor Warner Bros, so while the HBO Max service does get superhero movies it doesn’t have any of the Marvel ones — instead, it gets DC Comics movies such as next year’s The Batman and last month’s The Suicide Squad.
So, if Shang-Chi is going to have a home streaming release it’ll be on Disney Plus instead, so HBO Max subscribers are out of luck. The good news is that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will indeed release on Disney Plus, but the bad news is that it won’t be streaming alongside the movie’s theatrical release tomorrow. Instead, it will arrive on Disney Plus 45 days later — here’s the exact date Shang-Chi will launch on Disney Plus.
The good news is that HBO Max subscribers have a lot of cool content coming too. The Batman has been confirmed for an HBO Max release next year, albeit with a similar 45 day later clause as Shang-Chi, and Dune is coming in October at the same time as in theaters. As for Shang-Chi, early reactions from critics and influencers call it “phenomenal,” so it is certainly worth seeing — whether in theaters or waiting on the Disney Plus release.
