In Baldur’s Gate 3, Rangers specialize in hunting a particular type of enemy. The best Ranger build in BG3 compliments the character’s favored enemy and creates synergy between the class’s disparate abilities. Building a Ranger can be tough, but a good result can equip players with a formidable character.
There are multiple types of build for the Ranger in Baldur’s Gate 3. Players can either choose to specialize as a Hunter and excel at ranged and two-handed combat, or they can choose to call upon the beasts of the realm for companionship with the more magic oriented Beast Master.
Best Ranger Builds in Baldur’s Gate 3
At first look, Rangers seem like a combination of Rogues and Fighters, at least stat and ability-wise.
- Hit Die: d10
- Primary Stat: Dexterity
- Secondary Stats: Strength or Intelligence (if Beast Master or Hunter)
- Proficiencies:
- Strength Saving Throw
- Dexterity Saving Throw
- Light Armour
- Medium Armour

- Simple
- Martial Weapon
Rangers can use light armor and weapons and primarily support the party through the use of abilities. Alternatively, they can equip medium armor and be more hands-on.
Best starting Beast Master build
Race: Wood Elf
The Beast Master will use its animal companions to assist in battle. This means that these characters are better off hanging back and supporting their companion and the rest of the team.
The Wood Elf has +2 Dexterity, which will help new Rangers get off on the right foot. Additionally, this race gives a character Shortbow and Longbow Proficiency, which allows a fledgling Beast Master to hang back and cause damage from afar.
Best starting Hunter build
Race: Strongheart Halfling
Hunters are meant to excel at taking out one type of enemy. This specialization is up to the player. However, regardless of which foe becomes your Ranger’s bane, this build will be more hands-on than a Beast Master.
Strongheart Halflings start with +2 Dexterity, which helps bolster a beginning ranger. Their +1 Constitution will also let a Hunter more easily wade into foes without being immediately killed.
