One of the coolest new developments in gaming is the ability to move some of your current-gen games to next-gen consoles at no additional cost. If you’re looking to do a FIFA 21 PS5 upgrade or a FIFA 21 Xbox Series X upgrade, however, you’re going to have to deal with a very annoying restriction.
If you’re unfamiliar with this upgrade system, it’s pretty to understand. Suppose that you bought a game called Shooter Guy 4 on the PS4. When the PS5 comes out, you’ll be able to transfer your ownership of the game to the new console without having to buy the game again. This incentivizes players to buy games now and not have to worry about waiting for the next generation of games.
It’s a sensible invention for a next-gen transition, but your FIFA 21 PS5 upgrade is going to be a little trickier.
Just look at what’s buried in the terms and conditions following today’s reveal of a new trailer and gameplay features. Firstly, the next-gen upgrade offer goes away as soon as FIFA 22 and Madden 22 are launched next year. That’s a real bummer for people who are waiting to buy the next-gen consoles, but the restrictions only get sillier from there.
There is rarely much difference between a physical version and a digital version of a game these days, but EA has seen fit to split them up. If you buy a physical copy of the game, you’re going to need the disc to play it on the next-gen console. That means if you have a PS4 with a disc drive and buy PS5 without a disc drive, you won’t be able to get a free FIFA 21 PS5 upgrade.
It’s not all bad news, though. All of the progress you make on the current-gen console will carry over to the next-gen consoles as long as you stay within the same ecosystem. (That is, you can move from PS4 to PS5, but you can’t move from PS4 to Xbox Series X.)
For now, you can see all of the new features coming to FIFA 21 on the game’s official website. Check out the newest trailer below and get hyped for the next great FIFA game!
