Borderlands 3 Max Level Cap | What is the Level Cap?

Same as with past series entries, there is a max level cap in Borderlands 3. The Borderlands 3 max level ties into the game’s Guardian rank system, meaning players can only progress so far before they stop gaining experience. So, what is the Borderlands 3 level cap? Read on to find out.

The maximum level cap in Borderlands 3 is set at 50. Once reaching level 50 in the base game, players stop earning experience points and will no longer level up. This max level cap is still in place following the recent release of the Moxxi DLC.

Thankfully, the Borderlands 3 level cap can be reset by jumping into the first Guardian rank. By unlocking a Guardian Token, players can begin their journey anew, starting at the first Guardian level. From here, they can continue earning experience and leveling up until the next Guardian level promotion. Both enemy forces and loot will scale with this level, too. Greater risk, greater rewards.

The Guardian Rank system is largely similar to the series’ previous Badass Rank system. Players familiar with other game series such as Call of Duty or Counter-Strike will have heard other names for this process, including COD‘s Prestige Rank system or CS:GO‘s Service Medal ranks.

After reaching the max level cap of 50, players can start earning Guardian Ranks. These were at first infinite, but an update released back in October of 2019 set the Guardian Rank level cap at 850. That’s a long, long climb, and there’s little doubt players will make it to the true Borderlands 3 max level cap.

Hitting the Borderlands 3 level cap at level 50 is only the start of the adventure. While it may be a bit disappointing to know the base level cap remains unchanged after the first DLC release, there are still loads of Guardian Ranks for players to grind through.
