Xbox Series X launch games will be cross-gen, says Matt Booty

2020 will be a year of change in video games. Google Stadia will launch to the public, Intellivision will try to capture the casual market, and Microsoft and Sony will usher the mainstream into the next generation. If you remember back in 2013, console launches aren’t a hard line in the sand, and games can live on both new consoles and old for a while. Speaking with MCV/Develop, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty says that will not change in 2020 for Xbox Series X launch games.

As our content comes out over the next year, two years, all of our games, sort of like PC, will play up and down that family of devices. We want to make sure that if someone invests in Xbox between now and [Series X] that they feel that they made a good investment and that we’re committed to them with content.

Of course, we know one game that will exist on both consoles is Halo Infinite, and there’s excitement about Master Chief returning to the launch window. “It’s the first time in over 15 years that we’ll have a Halo title launching in sync with a new console. And that team is definitely going to be doing things to take advantage of [Series X].”

Xbox has been firm that Halo will launch with the new console, and Matt hopes that they can stick to release dates more often. Not just with Xbox Series X launch games, but across the generation. “We need to deliver on the promises that we make. So if we say a game is going to ship at a certain time, we’ve got to get that done, we just need to get better at executing.”

In the full interview, Booty also expands on studio culture and Xbox Game Studios, the type of games that work on Xbox Game Pass, and slowing down on acquiring studios. It appears to be a more considered strategy than what came with the Xbox One and will have to see if the Xbox Series X launch games can live up to the hype.
