Why is Modern Warfare installing shaders every time?

Numerous players trying to enjoy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) on PC via Blizzard’s Battle.net are being delayed when they launch the game. The shooter presents a prompt to install shaders and “optimize performance during gameplay,” which shouldn’t be necessary after the first time, but it’s forced regardless and takes forever. Seemingly, the glitch strikes certain people each and every time they play, whereas others are “only” affected after every update. So, why is Modern Warfare installing shaders every time? And is there an installing shaders fix?

How to stop Modern Warfare installing shaders every time

why is Modern Warfare installing shaders every time

Installing Modern Warfare shaders can be a slow process, which isn’t helped by the tendency for it to crash. If that happens to you and the progress bar gets stuck at any time, canceling and restarting should prompt it to get moving again.

It’s currently unknown precisely why installing shaders is required so frequently and only on the PC platform, but it definitely isn’t implemented by design and is rather the result of a bug on publisher Activision and developer Infinity Ward’s end. As a result, a future hotfix is likely to target and, hopefully, eliminate the issue.

In the meantime, however, you can try the following:

  • “Scan and Repair” your Call of Duty: Modern Warfare files via the Battle.net launcher
  • Uninstall the game and then perform a fresh reinstallation

With shader installation taking a long time on each occurrence, the lengthy one-time wait to reinstall the game and potentially fix the issue is worth it in the long run. Do note that it isn’t a guaranteed fix, though.

If the shader installation glitch shows up again following a full game reinstallation, you’ll need to wait on a patch that addresses the problem — here’s hoping the wait won’t be too long.
