Warhammer 40k live-action TV series announced

Yet another fantasy series with a link to video games is set to grace the small screen soon. Games Workshop recently announced that a Warhammer 40k live-action TV series is currently in the works. No release window was given.

According to Game’s Workshop’s press release, Frank Spotnitz’ Big Light Productions will be handling production on the series, called Eisenhorn. The new series will adapt trilogy of the same name, written by former Guardians of the Galaxy writer Dan Abnett. Spotnitz’ is no stranger to adapting books to television — his previous work includes Amazon’s live-action adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle.

Gamers might be familiar with the Eisenhorn trilogy through 2016’s Eisenhorn: Xenos for PC and Android. This game covered the first book of the trilogy, Xenos. For those who missed this game and the books, it follows the exploits of Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn. Together with his team of investigators, Eisenhorn works to uncover the schemes of the “aliens, heretics and daemons” that are plotting the fall of the crumbling Imperium of Man.

The press release states that the series is a mix of crime drama, sci-fi, and fantasy. It takes place some distance away from the unending wars and crusades that plague the series’ setting. This will likely help make the series easier for newcomers to  get into, allowing it to slowly introduce the various other races threatening the existence of mankind. It also likely helps in keeping the series’ budget down.

Additionally, with the focus on Gregor Eisenhorn, the series looks to give newcomers a character they can follow as they get their introduction into the Warhammer 40k universe. Hopefully the Warhammer 40k TV show new series does his story more justice than the critically panned video game. Though, based on the Spotnitz and Big Light’s previous work, the new show is likely in good hands.
