Psychonauts 2 has had a really big year so far, culminating in its appearance at Microsoft’s press conference at E3 last month, where the publisher confirmed that developer Double Fine Productions would be joining Microsoft as a first-party studio. While 2019 is a key year for the studio, it’s not one that will contain a release date. Double Fine has confirmed: Psychonauts 2 delayed to 2020. With that delay comes some good news. The developer also confirmed that, despite the studio’s purchase by Microsoft, Psychonauts 2 will definitely be coming to PS4 as well.
In an update today for the game’s backers on Fig, Double Fine confirmed that Psychonauts 2 was no longer releasing in 2019, something that it had previously mentioned offhandedly in a press release. “We’re now targeting next year for release,” the developer said. “We know it’s always disappointing when you have to wait a bit longer, but we also know that you are an amazing, supportive bunch, who – just like us – want the game to be as good as possible. So we’re hopeful you’ll understand!”

Going by the comments section, backers have generally been supportive of the move to 2020, provided it makes the game better. However, there was still concern about Double Fine’s buyout by Microsoft and the Xbox platform holder publishing Psychonauts 2, after the problems with previous publisher Starbreeze.
Fortunately, elsewhere in the update, Double Fine also confirms that, “we will be able to honor Psychonauts 2 for every platform that we have already promised here, and that includes bringing the game to PlayStation 4!” So even though Psychonauts 2 will be a first-party Microsoft game, as the game’s Fig campaign promised a PS4 release, it will continue to support the platform. That’s a far cry from the crowdfunding support for its backers some other games have received, so we salute Double Fine for honoring its promises.
