When Planetside 2 was announced as a PC exclusive many took it as a surprise. The game's developed and published by Sony making it an easy opportunity for PlayStation to score another console exclusive. But it passed on PS3. It became evident after release that its hardware-demanding visuals were too much for the current-gen console. The game's only hope of a console release would lie in the PS3's newer, faster brother: the PlayStation 4.
Unsurprisingly, Sony Only Entertainment has announced that Planetside 2 will be coming to the PS4. It appears Sony has made the console's hardware powerful enough to handle modern PC games because Planetside 2 was—and still is—considered a hardware-demanding game with 4GB of RAM and an ATI 4850 required to run the game on minimal settings. It isnt just for nothing. Planetside 2 is gorgeous with an incredibly large sci-fi landscape to wage war on.
The news doesn't end there. DC Universe Online will also be along for the ride giving PS4 a competitive list of MMOs early in its lifecycle. DCUO is already available on PS3 making it less of a big move than Planetside 2, but it's a welcome addition to the platform nonetheless.
Microsoft has been known to be extremely tough on developers who want to make their MMO available on Xbox. Consequently, the Xbox One has no MMOs planned for release. Meanwhile, the PS4 is already showing a cast of great games, and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will join the list at some point as well. Will this play as a factor in the next-gen console battle? Well, for console gamers looking for social experiences it certainly will.
Planetside 2 and DCUO will be available as free digital downloads on PS4 later this year.
