At first glance, a look at how to move the goalkeeper in FIFA 19 might feel like a redundant exercise. After all, your ‘keeper can comfortably make saves without you needing to do as much as lift a finger. However, a new meta tactic has cropped up in recent months: Manual goalkeeper movement. Having the ability to move your goalkeeper from side to side across the goalmouth can often be the difference between letting in a one-on-one opportunity or psyching your opponent out for the rest of the game. Confused as to how to do it? We’ve got you covered.
How to move the goalkeeper in FIFA 19
For the avoidance of doubt, this is about manually moving your goalkeeper. If you so wish, you can leave it the game to its own devices or bring the ‘keeper out using Y/Triangle, but this is a very different proposition.
The first thing you’re going to need to do is click in the right stick on your controller. It helps if you don’t have manual switching on for your team, too.
You’re now in control of your goalie. Move the right stick in any direction you’d wish to move him, as if you were controlling a normal player with the left analog stick. And that’s it! It really is that easy.
To summarize:
- Click the right stick in
- Use the right stick to move your goalkeeper
How to score against a manual goalkeeper
Of course, there’s also the small matter of the other side struggling to score against those who use (exploit?) the manual goalkeeper movement. What you need to do to counter it is, essentially, to double-bluff them. It’s a game of chess: If they’re expecting you to go one way (say, at the far post for a finesse shot) then you can score a cheeky goal by drilling in a low shot at the near post as the goalkeeper will be wrongfooted.
I’ve also found that waiting a beat before committing to the shot, and letting the opponent show their hand, can also pay off and make them look incredibly silly.
