Minecraft XP Fast 1.14 | How to get experience and how it’s used

Minecraft XP Fast 1.14

Gaining experience

Experience is gained in Minecraft in a few different ways. The most prominent way is by killing mobs; killing enemy mobs like Skeletons and Creepers as well as friendlier mobs like Cows and Chickens will give you a few points of experience. Aside from killing mobs, you can also earn XP by mining ore and baking goods in a Furnace. These aren’t the only ways to get experience — you can also get it from trading with villagers and using Bottles o’ Enchanting — but they are the most common that you will encounter.

How to use experience

Now that you have some experience, what is it used for? There are a bunch of things you can do and all of them will make your gameplay experience a lot easier. These include:

  • Enchanting items/books
  • Combining enchanted items/books
  • Naming items
  • Repairing damaged items/enchanted items

Suffice it to say, you’re going to need to use experience if you’re using anything more than the most basic of gear in Minecraft.

Remember the level curve!

If you take away anything from our Minecraft XP Fast 1.14 guide, make sure it’s this: it’s important to remember the level curve. According to the Experience page on the Minecraft wiki, it takes a paltry 7 experience to get Level 1. Level 10 takes 160 experience, Level 20 takes 550 experience, and Level 30 takes 1,395 experience.

Essentially, this means that higher levels take longer to get — just like most RPGs both old and new. If you only need a few levels to repair an item or combine some low-level enchanted books, it’s more efficient to use them sooner rather than later.

Minecraft XP Fast 1.14 | Best XP farm

Minecraft XP Fast 1.14

So, what’s the best XP farm? Way back in the day, you’d have to clear out an entire chunk of space and build a massive tower filled with mobs. You could just AFK in there and collect levels idly. Now, you have to actively participate in order to earn experience.

One of the easiest ways to get experience is by slaughtering animals. Chickens are by far the easiest to maintain, but they give out less experience. Simply build an enclosed pen and throw some eggs into there, then let the chickens grow up. You can get Seeds by busting up grass and use it to feed the chickens to get them to make babies, too.

Once you have a few chickens set up (and a good bit of mining done), you might want to set up a simpler system. Build a floor above your chicken pen and put a bunch of hoppers on the entire floor. Connect these hoppers to a dispenser with a simple Redstone timer and a switch. The chickens up top will drop their eggs into the hoppers and the hoppers will feed them into the dispenser. The dispenser will then shoot the eggs into the wall or floor and occasionally spawn fresh chickens. This all happens automatically, meaning your only job is to kill all of the chickens in the lower area, partially to gain some experience and partially to keep your game from lagging to heck.

As time goes on, you’re going to want to diversify your animal farm. Raising cows and pigs are useful for food and leather. Set up decently-sized wheat and carrot farms to feed your boys and continue to grow your penned populations until they get a little too big to manage. Kill off some of your cows and/or pigs and then repeat the process.

Between Chickens, Cows, and Pigs, you’ll be able to get 20 or 30 levels with no problem. Combined with mining ore and you’ll soon have more experience than you know what to do with.

Banking XP for later

You might not want to spend XP right away, but you may need to hold onto a bunch. What’s the best way? In my opinion, that would be to make use of Furnaces. Furnaces are cheap to make and you’ll soon be swimming in coal from all of your mining. I typically have a bank of dozens of furnaces in which I cook cobblestone. Once they’re done, I don’t touch them; I’ll grab the cobblestone in there if I need just a few levels of experience. (Don’t forget to replace it!)

Animals will get you experience much faster, but a bank of furnaces can provide some long-term storage that isn’t hard to build. Definitely make some space for them!
