The Outer Worlds release date

The Outer Worlds release date quickly removed from Steam

Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds release date has appeared on Steam before being hastily removed. The update to The Outer Worlds Steam page added August 6, 2019 as the release date as well as details on language supports. Shortly after, the updates were removed, and the date was changed to just 2019. Neither Obsidian or Steam have commented on the potential error.

The Outer Worlds was only announced in 2019 and, therefore, an August 2019 release date may seem like a quick turnaround. Obsidian co-director Leonard Boyarsky did recently confirm The Outer Worlds length will range from 15-to-40 hours and focus on a “more tightly-controlled game than a giant sandbox open world where you can run everywhere.” However, the length and size of the game don’t necessarily dictate development time.

The Outer Worlds website provides no indication regarding release date but does provide some backstory for the game’s setting before launch. The site introduces the plot, “Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.” The summary suggests the game takes cues from franchises such as Alien and Star Trek while likely showing glimpses to Obsidian’s past work on the Fallout franchise.

A recent trailer released by Obsidian gave players a better look at the gameplay and combat in The Outer Worlds. The game’s gameplay appears to focus on blending first-person shooting, stealth, and utilizing the companion system. Navigating the dialogue system also seems likely to be a prominent aspect of the game, with the developers recently discussing how The Outer Worlds can be completed without killing anyone.

Obsidian Entertainment’s final game as an independent developer, before being acquired by Xbox Games Studios, was Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. The studio had also been working on vehicle-based combat game Armored Warfare before leaving the rest of development to the game’s publisher in February 2017. Despite being purchased by Xbox Game Studios, The Outer Worlds will remain a multi-platform game.
