Whisper it, but we might want a Kings Canyon replacement already. Despite that, the chance of a new Apex Legends map feels pretty slim, especially with the first season still tentatively set for March. Still, below, we’ll look at the likelihood of an Apex Legends second map coming to the game thanks to Respawn itself, as well as how other battle royale contenders introduced map changes. In fact, shout it from the rooftops: We want an Apex Legends new map rotation right about now. I’m bored of sand.
Is there a new Apex Legends map release date?
It may be a tough pill to swallow for those looking to head elsewhere in Apex Legends, but there isn’t a second map on the way. To make matters worse, the roadmap which outlines the first three months of the game’s life-cycle, doesn’t make reference to a map at all. See for yourself.
Only a Battle Pass, new Legends, new weapons, and new loot are namechecked. A new Apex Legends map? Nowhere to be seen.
But that hasn’t stopped Respawn talking about the possibility of a second map after Kings Canyon. During an interview with Venture Beat, Respawn CEO Vince Zampella was remarkably forthright about plans for a new playground to stomp around in, saying, “There will be new maps, new modes, new characters, new weapons, new skins. There will be a ton of stuff coming over the next year to 10, maybe.”
If that’s the case, we could be looking at late 2019 or even a 2020 release date for an Apex Legends map. PUBG, for example, took nine months to release its second map, Miramar. Fortnite, meanwhile, didn’t fully lean into its transformative map changes until the tail-end of season 3, some six months after its debut. Just going by its peers, we can probably expect something new around August to October though, of course, these things are always likely to change.
And what would the new map even look like? Zampella hints that it may house more players than the 60 total we have now and, in theory, be more expansive in scope, hinting: “We’ll probably release other maps that are bigger if we decide they’re fun.”
So, a bigger second map that might just leave Kings Canyon in the dust potentially coming by season 4’s end in December? We’re in.
